Robinhood Markets, Inc. has officially launched its flagship $658.4 million venture fund on the New York Stock Exchange, providing retail investors with a rare opportunity to access high-profile, privately held technology companies. The fund, which began trading on Friday under the ticker RVI, aims to democratize a sector of the market that has traditionally been the exclusive domain of major venture capital firms in the United States and beyond.

The fund's portfolio includes significant stakes in prominent private entities such as the software startup Databricks, the fintech company Ramp, and the financial services firm Revolut. These companies have seen their valuations climb dramatically in recent years, with Databricks raising capital at a $134 billion valuation in February and Ramp reaching a $32 billion valuation in November. Such figures often rival or exceed the market capitalization of established companies within the S&P 500.

\"There is a big gap in the market where the retail customer cannot access private assets,\" Robinhood CFO Shiv Verma told Reuters in an interview.

During its initial public offering, Robinhood priced the fund at $25 per share and sold 12.6 million shares. Although the total capital raised was lower than the company’s initial targets, the launch proceeds amidst a volatile market environment characterized by geopolitical tensions and concerns over AI-driven industry shifts. Analysts have noted that while the fund carries risks related to the fluctuation of private company valuations and a slow IPO exit market, these challenges are inherent to the venture capital space.

\"These are great investments, they’re going to do well and if there’s some short-term volatility in the interim, because it’s a closed-end fund, you’re not forced to sell,\" Verma said.

Verma further explained that Robinhood deliberately selected industry-leading, late-stage companies to minimize the risks associated with early-stage startups. The fund also attracted interest from institutional investors during its roadshow and may eventually expand its reach into other sectors, including robotics, energy, aerospace, and defense. This expansion reflects the broader transformation of Robinhood Markets, Inc. from a retail trading application into a diversified financial services platform, a shift that has helped propel its market capitalization above $72 billion.
