Rising Diesel Prices Threaten Global Economic Growth
High diesel prices caused by Middle East tensions threaten global growth. Analysts warn the surge could increase food costs and trigger cost-push inflation.
Global economic activity is facing a significant threat as diesel prices surge, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Analysts warn that the conflict is pressuring supplies of the industrial fuel and the type of crude oil most suited to produce it.
Diesel markets have already been strained by years of disruptions, including attacks by Ukraine on refineries in Russia and subsequent Western sanctions on exports from Moscow. The current geopolitical friction involving Israel and the United States against Iran has intensified supply anxieties, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, through which between 10% and 20% of global seaborne diesel supplies flow.
