Quad to build Fiji port and sign critical minerals pact
Quad foreign ministers agreed to build a port in Fiji and signed pacts on critical minerals. The group aims to strengthen supply chains and energy security.
The United States, India, Japan, and Australia agreed on May 26 to build a port in Fiji and secure critical mineral supply chains. This third ministerial meeting since September 2024 marks the Quad's first joint infrastructure project. The move signals a pivot toward practical economic cooperation to counter regional influence from China.
### Securing the Pacific Supply Chain The four nations will partner with Fiji to address insufficient port capacity across the Pacific Islands. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the initiative as a demonstration of the group's ability to deliver resilient infrastructure. The project represents a shift from theoretical maritime security toward tangible physical assets in the region.
