Pentagon Urges Baltic States to Tone Down Russia Rhetoric

Pentagon officials have asked several NATO nations in the Baltic region to moderate their public statements regarding Russia. The private requests aim to prevent escalating tensions as the US pushes for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine.

The United States Department of Defense asked several NATO nations to tone down public rhetoric against Russia, four people familiar with the matter said during late October. The private diplomatic push follows the United States administration's efforts to broker a negotiated settlement in Ukraine. Washington argues that harsh European statements risk undermining continental security and playing into Kremlin messaging.
