Pakistan closes schools to reduce energy consumption
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered two-week school closures and reduced office attendance to lower fuel use. These measures follow record petrol price hikes.
Pakistan is implementing a series of emergency measures to reduce energy consumption and government spending as global oil prices, specifically Brent Crude Oil, rise sharply due to regional conflict. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday that schools will close for two weeks and a significant portion of the workforce will transition to remote work to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis. The measures come as the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States threatens energy supplies and has already driven domestic fuel prices to record highs. Pakistan, which imports the vast majority of its energy requirements, is particularly vulnerable to these global market fluctuations.
Sharif addressed the nation in a televised speech to outline the necessity of these austerity steps.
