Oil markets experienced a volatile session on Thursday, with prices climbing more than $1 as market participants closely monitored the third round of nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. Brent Crude Oil Futures rose by $1.17, or 1.65%, to reach $72.02 per barrel. Simultaneously, WTI Crude Oil Futures gained 87 cents, or 1.33%, to trade at $66.29 per barrel. These gains represent a significant reversal from earlier in the day when both benchmarks had declined by more than $1. The indirect discussions taking place in Geneva are aimed at resolving a long-standing nuclear dispute and preventing potential military conflict in the region. Negotiations have been paused for a break involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with plans to resume later in the day. Analysts and traders noted that the price reversal was closely tied to the shifting sentiment surrounding the diplomatic efforts. John Kilduff, Partner at Again Capital, suggested that the market is reacting to perceived friction in the negotiations. > "Media reports coming out seem to show that things are not going so great in Geneva and we could be reaching the end of the road in terms of hostilities between Iran and the U.S. finally breaking out, so that is what the market is seeing and that is why prices are rallying." While the current lack of progress is supporting prices, a potential breakthrough remains a downside risk for the market. Phil Flynn, an analyst at Price Futures Group, highlighted the potential impact of a diplomatic resolution on global supply. > "If we do get a deal with Iran, that would be very bearish for prices especially if there is talk of lifting sanctions because that would unleash a lot of oil into the market."
