OECD Warns African Corporate Debt Markets Are Too Small

The OECD reports that Africa corporate debt markets remain shallow with only 211 billion dollars in outstanding debt. The shortfall limits economic growth and resilience against global market stress.

Africa's corporate debt markets totaled $211 billion at the end of 2025, lagging far behind the continent's economic weight, the OECD said on Friday. The shortfall risks undermining economic growth and leaves local firms vulnerable to global market shocks when foreign lenders withdraw. Capital markets remain underutilized for long-term financing compared to other emerging regions, limiting resilience.
