Nearly 40 percent of coal-fired power plants in India operate with critically low fuel stocks due to rising electricity demand driven by high temperatures. Government data shows the affected plants increased significantly as peak power demand remained elevated.

Nearly 40% of India's coal-fired power plants are operating with critically low fuel stocks as electricity demand surges during El Niño-linked heat. The inventory shortage affects 74 utility facilities, up from 60 plants the prior week, per Central Electricity Authority data released Monday afternoon. Peak electricity consumption in the country has hovered between 230 gigawatts and 250 gigawatts over the past week, following an all-time high of 270.70 gigawatts in May.
