Navi Pillay Wins Nobel Peace Prize
South African lawyer Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her human rights work. The decision bypassed Donald Trump, who criticized the choice and argued he deserved the honor.
United States President Donald Trump was passed over for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarding the honor to South African lawyer Navi Pillay on October 9. The decision follows military interventions in Venezuela and Iran that expanded presidential wartime actions. Trump criticized the selection as disgraceful, arguing his own diplomatic efforts warranted the prize.
The committee's chair, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, said international law is under tremendous pressure amid a global shift toward power politics. Hours after the announcement, the United States administration imposed severe financial sanctions on the International Criminal Court. Trump claimed he deserved recognition for brokering eight conflicts, including a nominal ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and actions regarding Iran's nuclear program.
