Mkango Resources Ltd officially opened the first commercial rare earth permanent magnet production facility in the United Kingdom
GBin 25 years today, January 15, 2026. Located in Birmingham, the plant is operated by HyProMag, a subsidiary of Mkango Resources Ltd, and represents a pivotal shift in domestic manufacturing capabilities. British Industry Minister Chris McDonald chris mcdonaldattended the opening ceremony, highlighting government support for a sector that saw its domestic capacity cease approximately 25 years ago when production moved overseas.
The facility utilizes a cutting-edge hydrogen-based recycling process developed at the University of Birmingham to recover magnets from end-of-life products. This technology strips magnets and converts them into new high-performance rare-earth material. Unlike conventional mining and refining, which carry heavy environmental costs, this recycling method offers a significantly lower carbon footprint. The resulting rare earth permanent magnets are essential components for electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and a wide range of consumer electronics.
