Business confidence in the chemical sector of Germany has deteriorated sharply in March as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East weigh heavily on the industry. According to the latest survey from the Ifo Institute, the sector is facing a significant downturn, compounding existing structural weaknesses.

The Ifo business climate index for the chemical industry fell to -25.0 points in March, a steep decline from the seasonally adjusted -16.7 points recorded in February. Expectations for the coming months have also turned more pessimistic, with that sub-index sliding to -17.9 points from -12.1. Ifo industry expert Anna Wolf highlighted the immediate impact of global instability on the domestic market.

The consequences of the military hostilities in the Middle East are hitting the already struggling chemical industry with full force.

The German chemical sector, which ranks as the country's third-largest industry, has been under intense pressure for several years. Manufacturers are currently struggling with a combination of weak global demand, persistently high energy costs, and frequent supply chain disruptions. These long-standing issues have been further aggravated by recent military hostilities in the Middle East.

As companies find themselves with limited options to navigate these challenging conditions, many are considering workforce reductions to maintain viability. Employment expectations in the sector have plummeted to an all-time low of -32.1 points, reflecting the deepening crisis within the sector.

Companies can scarcely influence the difficult conditions, so the only room for maneuver they have left is to cut jobs.
