Michigan Approves 50M for Mine
The Michigan Strategic Fund board approved 50 million dollars in funding for the Copperwood Mine project. The decision uses previously appropriated funds to bypass legislative committees amid environmental concerns.
The Michigan Strategic Fund board approved $50 million in funding for the Copperwood Mine project on Tuesday evening, utilizing 2022 appropriations to bypass legislative committees. The 7-2 vote came after two hours of public comment from residents citing environmental concerns over the Gogebic County development.
The funding package allocates $44.9 million in Strategic Site Readiness Program dollars to Copperwood Resources Inc. and $5 million to the Gogebic County Road Commission. The state agency leveraged funds originally intended for a different project that failed to materialize, avoiding the state House and Senate appropriations committees that previously stalled the project.
