Mexico Bans Brazilian Poultry After Disease Outbreak
Mexico has suspended poultry imports from Brazil following a Newcastle disease outbreak in Santa Catarina. The restrictions aim to protect domestic production from the contagious viral infection.
Mexico banned poultry imports from Brazil on Monday evening following an outbreak of Newcastle disease in the southern state of Santa Catarina. The restriction protects domestic production in Mexico, which holds a disease-free status. Brazil ranks as the world's largest exporter of chicken meat.
The suspension halts shipments of chicken meat, poultry offal, fertile eggs, and chicks up to three days old. The ban also covers ornamental birds, songbirds, birds of prey, and companion birds, according to the Mexican Agriculture Ministry.
