Meta breaks ground on 1 billion dollar Tulsa data center
Meta began building a 1 billion dollar data center in Tulsa today. The site will create over 1,000 jobs and expand the company's global AI infrastructure.
META PLATFORMS INC-CLASS A has officially commenced construction on a new data center facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The project, which represents an investment exceeding $1 billion, is part of a strategic effort by the social media giant to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure and secure the computing power necessary for future technological developments.

Located within the Fair Oaks Innovation Park, the facility will span more than 2 million square feet. This development marks the first data center for the company in Oklahoma and its 28th facility within the United States. Globally, this will be the 32nd data center in the company's portfolio.
The construction phase is expected to generate significant local employment, with more than 1,000 jobs anticipated at the peak of building activity. Once the site is fully operational, it is projected to support approximately 100 permanent roles. Meta has committed to covering the full costs associated with the water and wastewater services required for the site's operations.
Governor Kevin Stitt highlighted the state's energy capacity as a primary draw for such large-scale industrial projects.
\"We produce more energy than we consume in Oklahoma, giving companies like Meta the reliable and affordable power they need to grow and innovate.\"
Fortis Construction has been named the general contractor for the project. This expansion comes as major technology firms face increasing scrutiny from environmental and consumer advocacy groups regarding the high energy demands of massive data centers.
The investment aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader vision to integrate AI across the company’s services, a transition involving hundreds of billions of dollars in capital expenditure. Despite the heavy investment in infrastructure, the company is also navigating internal restructuring. Recent reports indicate that Meta plans to initiate a significant wave of layoffs starting May 20, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations throughout the year.
