Mark Burrows Wins NC House District 119 Election

Democrat Mark Burrows defeated Republican Anna Ferguson in the North Carolina House District 119 race. The election focused on property taxes and storm recovery.

N.C. House Rep. Mike Clampitt, right, makes a face after it was announced that his tie with Pastor Dennis Thurman, of Pole Creek Baptist Church, was to be decided by an eat off after the two ate a pint of ice cream in the celebrity category of the PET ice cream eating contest at the N.C. Mountain State Fair at the WNC Agricultural Center on Sept. 12, 2017. Reigning champion Thurman won.

Democrat Mark Burrows defeated Republican Anna Ferguson by a margin of 52.4% to 47.7% in the North Carolina House District 119 race. The contest followed the April appointment of Ferguson to the United States state legislature after the death of Rep. Mike Clampitt. The election served as a referendum on local economic pressures across Western mountain communities.
