Shipping Lines Reroute Around Africa After Iran Strikes
Major shipping firms are rerouting vessels around Africa following strikes on Iran. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd suspended Suez routes and added war risk surcharges.
Global maritime operations are facing significant disruption as major shipping lines divert vessels away from the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The decision follows recent military strikes by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran, coupled with the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz. AP MOLLER-MAERSK A/S-A, the Denmark-based shipping giant, confirmed it is pausing all future Trans-Suez sailings for the foreseeable future. This reversal comes after the company had previously attempted to resume services in the Red Sea, which had been plagued by attacks from Yemen-based Houthi rebels.
Due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East region following the escalating military conflict, we have decided to pause future Trans-Suez sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait for the time being.
