Airlines Warn EU Carbon Plan Will Raise Fares
The heads of Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, and Ryanair have urged the European Commission not to extend the Emissions Trading System to international flights. They argue the move would increase costs for passengers and undermine United Nations decarbonization efforts.
Major airline CEOs urged the European Union to scrap plans extending carbon costs to international flights to prevent rising ticket prices. The proposal targets emissions from flights departing the bloc, whereas the current Emissions Trading System only covers flights within Europe. The group warned that widening the scheme would penalize European passengers and businesses by increasing the cost of airfare and cargo.
Leaders from Air France-KLM, IAG, Lufthansa, and Ryanair signed a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. They argued that widening the scheme would penalize European businesses.
