Lufthansa Submits Offer for Stake in TAP Air Portugal
Lufthansa submitted a non-binding offer today for a minority stake in TAP. Portugal aims to sell 44.9 percent of the carrier to a strategic airline partner.
The German aviation group Lufthansa has officially submitted a non-binding proposal to acquire a minority interest in the Portuguese flag carrier, TAP Air Portugal. This offer was presented to Parpublica, the state-owned holding company in Portugal, marking a significant step in the nation's long-awaited privatization process. The initiative from Germany aligns with the Portuguese government's objective to find a strategic partner capable of bolstering the airline's international competitiveness and network reach. The privatization framework, which was reactivated in July following several delays, involves the sale of a 44.9% stake to a major airline industry player. Furthermore, 5% of the company's equity has been set aside for the airline's workforce. Both the German group and the Portuguese carrier maintain significant operational ties to AIRBUS SE, as both fleets are largely comprised of the manufacturer's aircraft. This commonality could provide substantial operational and maintenance advantages if the acquisition proceeds. The Portuguese state remains focused on selecting a partner that can effectively leverage TAP's strategic position, particularly its extensive routes connecting Europe to Brazil and various African destinations.
