The London Metal Exchange (LME) has officially initiated a consultation process regarding proposed updates to its position limit rules. This move is designed to align with new regulatory requirements within the United Kingdom. Currently, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is responsible for setting and managing position limits for commodity derivatives to mitigate market manipulation. However, this authority is scheduled to transfer directly to the trading venues starting July 6. The LME, recognized as the primary global marketplace for metals, stated that the new framework would provide deeper insight into market-wide positions. This shift allows the exchange to directly calibrate and manage limits to ensure market integrity. > The new regime will give the LME greater insight into positions across the market and an ability to calibrate and manage position limits directly. In a detailed 149-page consultation paper, the exchange noted that while there may be compliance costs associated with these changes, the move is deemed necessary for the long-term health of the marketplace. > However, the current view of the LME is that the proposals are justified as they are in the interests of the wider market and would strengthen LME markets. Market participants have until March 27 at 6 p.m. GMT to submit their responses to the proposal.
