Leonardo CEO Welcomes Germany as Potential GCAP Partner
Leonardo CEO Lorenzo Mariani stated that Germany would bring valuable expertise to the Global Combat Air Programme following the reported struggles of the rival FCAS project. The joint venture between Italy, Britain, and Japan aims to develop a next-generation fighter jet by 2035.
LEONARDO SPA CEO Lorenzo Mariani said Germany would be a strong partner for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) fighter project. The statement follows the collapse of the rival Future Combat Air System (FCAS) led by France and Berlin. Expanding the partnership could help distribute the tens of billions in development costs required for next-generation aerial defense.
### A Strategic Opening for GCAP Mariani told Reuters on Tuesday afternoon that Berlin would bring industrial expertise to the venture. The GCAP project is currently a joint effort between the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. The partners plan to build the new jet by 2035.
