KoBold Metals begins 50 million dollar lithium search
KoBold Metals has committed 50 million dollars to explore lithium reserves in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The firm aims to secure battery mineral supply.
The mineral exploration firm KoBold Metals, backed by high-profile investors including Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, has initiated a major lithium exploration campaign in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The company has committed more than $50 million to the project, with the investment scheduled to be deployed by early 2027. This initiative marks a significant expansion for the AI-driven explorer as it targets the critical minerals necessary for the global transition to clean energy.
The United States has increasingly prioritized the central African nation in its strategy to secure stockpiles of critical minerals. This push is part of a broader effort to diversify supply chains and mitigate the dominant market position held by China. While the country is already recognized as the world's leading cobalt producer and the largest supplier of Copper in Africa, its vast lithium reserves remain largely untapped.
