Japanese manufacturing sentiment falls on Middle East unrest
Confidence among Japanese manufacturers fell 11 points in April due to Middle East tensions. Rising oil costs and supply chain issues impacted the sector.
Business confidence among manufacturers in Japan experienced its sharpest monthly decline in over three years this April, according to the latest Reuters Tankan poll. The survey, which serves as a leading indicator for the quarterly business sentiment index released by the BANK OF JAPAN/THE, showed that manufacturers' sentiment fell 11 points to plus 7. This represents the largest monthly drop since January 2023 and the first decline in sentiment in three months.
The sudden downturn reflects growing anxieties regarding the conflict involving Iran, which has threatened to disrupt global supply chains and energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. These geopolitical tensions have contributed to volatility in the price of Brent Crude Oil, a critical concern for a nation that depends on the Middle East for nearly 95% of its total oil supply.
