Japan Reboots Spending Review for Funding
Japan has relaunched its government spending review to scrutinize public funds and subsidies. The initiative aims to secure revenue for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichis costly policy pledges.

Japan rebooted its spending review on Friday morning, widening scrutiny of tens of billions of dollars in public funds to finance Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's policy pledges. The renewed push follows a first review of special tax measures earlier this year that yielded just three abolition proposals from roughly 120 tax breaks. The lacklustre outcome has increased pressure on the government to find funding for a planned consumption tax cut on food from April 2027.
