Japan Approves 4 Billion Dollars for Chipmaker Rapidus
Japan's industry ministry approved 631.5 billion yen to boost domestic chip production. Rapidus aims to mass-produce 2-nanometer logic semiconductors by 2027.
The government of Japan has officially sanctioned an additional 631.5 billion yen ($3.96 billion) in funding to support the research and development initiatives of domestic chipmaker Rapidus. This move by the industry ministry is designed to accelerate the nation's capabilities in advanced semiconductor manufacturing and to fortify the resilience of local chip supply chains. With this latest injection of capital, the total government assistance for Rapidus's research and development efforts has reached 2.354 trillion yen.

The industry ministry also confirmed that its subordinate organization, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), has decided to support semiconductor design projects involving FUJITSU LIMITED and INTL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. These collaborations are part of a broader push to enhance the technological infrastructure required for next-generation computing.
Rapidus is currently focused on the development of cutting-edge 2-nanometre logic semiconductors, with plans to commence mass production by the 2027 fiscal year. Earlier this year, in February, the firm successfully secured approximately 160 billion yen in private sector investment, complemented by a planned 250 billion yen from the government.
