Japan and France are set to formalize a strategic agreement to diversify the supply of rare earths and other critical minerals, according to reports from the Nikkei. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to establish a roadmap aimed at securing these essential resources amidst growing global supply chain concerns.

The forthcoming joint statement from the two leaders is anticipated to express specific concern regarding export restrictions placed on critical minerals. To address these vulnerabilities, the governments of Japan and France plan to initiate a public-private refining project in southwestern France by the end of this year. This facility will specialize in processing heavy rare earths, which are indispensable for the manufacturing of electric vehicle motors and various high-tech applications.

In addition to mineral security, the bilateral cooperation will expand into the space industry. Organizations from both countries are expected to sign memorandums of understanding for 12 joint projects. These ventures will include a range of activities, such as the development of technologies for space debris removal and collaborative efforts in rocket launches.
