Iran considers tolls for ships in the Strait of Hormuz
Iranian lawmakers are considering a bill to levy transit fees on vessels using the Strait of Hormuz. The move aims to monetize control of the strategic route.
Iran is considering a legislative proposal to levy transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could allow the nation to monetize its control over one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. A lawmaker stated on Thursday that the Iranian parliament is reviewing a bill that would require countries using the waterway for shipping, energy transit, and food supplies to pay tolls and taxes.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global commerce, with approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it daily. This strategic maneuver follows ongoing disruptions to maritime transit linked to the conflict involving the United States and Israel. Tehran has previously restricted access for vessels it identifies as being associated with its adversaries.
