Iowa Allocates 25M to Teen Instagram Users
Iowa plans to distribute twenty five million dollars from its Meta settlement to young Instagram users. Attorney General Brenna Bird announced the restitution fund on Monday. The broader agreement resolves state lawsuits regarding child safety.
Meta Platforms Inc-Class A will allocate $25 million to compensate teen social media users under a settlement announced on Monday afternoon, September 14. The agreement follows a $16.7 billion nationwide pact between the company and state attorneys general over child safety concerns. Iowa will receive at least $126.5 million from the broader resolution, with half mandated for child protection efforts.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird stated that the restitution fund is a first-of-its-kind initiative for social media users. Payouts are projected at about $100 per Instagram Teen Account user, though final eligibility criteria remain under development. The state also secured $9.2 million from a parallel settlement regarding data sharing with third parties, bringing Iowa's total recovery to nearly $135.7 million.
