US Dollar and Gold Outperform Other Safe Haven Assets
Investors are favoring the US dollar and gold as Middle East tensions rise. Traditional havens like bonds and the yen face pressure from fiscal worries.
Recent turmoil in the Middle East has triggered a flight to safety, compelling investors to reconsider which assets offer the most robust protection. The selection process has become increasingly complex as traditional safe havens demonstrate unconventional behavior. While gold has shown significant price fluctuations, the dollar has regained momentum after a period of relative weakness.
The United States dollar has performed exceptionally well among safe-haven assets this week. The dollar index, which tracks the currency against a basket of six others, has increased by 1.5%. Notably, the greenback has strengthened against both the USD/CHF and USD/JPY pairings, which typically serve as primary refuges. This strength is supported by the nation's status as a net energy exporter, particularly as Brent Crude Oil prices remain elevated above $80 per barrel.
