South Bend Manufacturers Navigate Economic Policy Shifts
South Bend manufacturers face a mix of growth and decline amid shifting policies. National data shows a loss of 100,000 factory jobs since the inauguration.
In the industrial heart of the United States, the city of South Bend, Indiana, serves as a complex case study for the manufacturing policies of President Donald Trump. While the administration highlights a nationwide factory boom, the reality on the ground is a patchwork of growth in specific niches and stagnation in traditional sectors. John Axelberg, CEO of General Stamping & Metalworks, exemplifies this divide. Although his solar energy components business grew by 30% last year due to tax incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act passed under President Joe Biden, his other divisions serving heavy trucks and farm equipment fell by 20%, leading him to halt an $800,000 expansion plan.
I have no confidence that he wont just pass another executive order and start coming after the (solar) credits weve received and try to claw them back.
