Indian stocks decline on rising oil and US trade probes
Indian shares fell today as oil prices topped 100 dollars following Middle East tanker attacks. New US trade probes into India further weighed on sentiment.
Equity markets in India opened significantly lower on Thursday, continuing a downward trend as geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties weighed on investor confidence. The Nifty 50 index retreated 1.13% to 23,596.2, while the BSE Sensex, managed by BSE Limited, dropped 1.23% to 75,921.04. The decline was observed across all 16 major sectors, with broader market indices for small-cap and mid-cap stocks falling 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively. Market volatility was driven by a sharp rise in global oil prices, which surged past $100 per barrel. This escalation followed reports from security officials in Iraq that explosive-laden boats from Iran had targeted two fuel-oil tankers. The incident occurs amid a wider conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iranian interests, leading to a total halt in operations at several oil ports. For major oil importers like the Indian economy, these price hikes threaten to increase inflationary pressures and expand the national import bill. Compounding the market's struggles, sentiment was further pressured by the announcement of new trade investigations by the American government. These probes target 16 key partners, including the Indian market, as part of a strategy to reinstate aggressive tariff policies.
