Indian Stocks Trade Flat Amid Rising Oil and Mideast Tension
Indian shares remained flat on Monday as rising oil prices countered gains in the banking sector. ICICI Bank rose on strong results while HDFC Bank shares fell.
Equity markets in India remained largely unchanged during early trading on Monday as investors weighed rising geopolitical tensions against positive domestic corporate developments. The benchmark Nifty 50 index saw a marginal increase of 0.04%, reaching 24,363.25, while the Sensex rose 0.13% to 78,595.03. Despite these slight gains in the main indices, the broader market showed signs of weakness, with ten of the 16 major sectors trading in the red. Small-cap and mid-cap stocks also faced pressure, dropping 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
The primary source of market caution stemmed from a sharp rise in energy costs. Brent Crude Oil prices climbed 5.6% to reach $95.4 per barrel following an escalation in the Middle East. The United States reported the seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel that allegedly attempted to bypass a blockade, leading Iran to issue threats of retaliation. As a major importer of crude and gas, the Indian economy remains sensitive to price spikes, which can negatively impact growth and inflation forecasts.
