Indian Shares Open Lower as Crude Stays Above 100 Dollars
Indian benchmarks opened slightly lower on Monday as crude oil prices remained above 100 dollars. Investors stayed cautious amid ongoing Middle East tensions.
Equity benchmarks in India remained largely unchanged at the start of the trading week as investors maintained a cautious stance. The market sentiment was weighed down by crude oil prices, which continued to hold above the $100 per barrel mark amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. As of 9:15 a.m. IST, the Nifty 50 index recorded a minor decline of 0.15%, trading at 23,116.1. Similarly, the BSE Sensex, operated by BSE Limited, shed 0.2% to reach 74,415.79. The broader market reflected this sluggishness, with mid-cap and small-cap indices each dropping approximately 0.2%. The energy sector remains a primary focus for market participants. Brent crude oil prices hovered near $104 per barrel, a level that impacts the performance of energy-related assets such as the United States Brent Oil Fund, LP. The persistence of high energy costs is largely attributed to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East, which threatens global supply chains. In the United States, President Donald Trump has increased pressure on international partners to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz. This region serves as a critical artery for global oil and gas shipments, and any disruption there could further destabilize energy markets. Within the Indian market, 14 out of 16 major sectors opened in negative territory, reflecting the widespread impact of global macro-economic uncertainty.
