Delhi Opposes Pernod Ricard Liquor License Challenge
Delhi authorities are opposing Pernod Ricard's legal bid to restore its liquor license. The company says the three-year ban has left its business fettered.
PERNOD RICARD SA is challenging the India capital's repeated rejection of its city liquor license in a new court filing. The France-based distiller claims the three-year ban has left its Delhi operations "hopelessly fettered" and commercially paralyzed. Restoring access to the capital is critical as the city typically generates 5% of the firm's $2.86 billion in annual Indian revenue.
### Regulatory Deadlock in the Capital Pernod Ricard's application was rejected for a fourth time in February, citing ongoing investigations into alleged market collusion. Regulators told the Delhi High Court in an April 30 filing that granting the license would expose the system to risk and harm public interest. The government maintains it holds plenary powers to restrict licenses to protect regulatory integrity.
