India launches first Mumbai rainfall futures on June 1
NCDEX will launch India's first weather derivatives on June 1 to hedge monsoon risks. Cash-settled futures use rainfall data to manage financial disruptions.
The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will launch India's first exchange-traded weather derivatives on June 1 to hedge rainfall risks in Mumbai. The cash-settled futures contracts track rainfall deviation data from the state-run India Meteorological Department. This launch provides a market-based tool for sectors like logistics and construction to manage monsoon disruptions that frequently paralyze the financial capital.
### Hedging Against Monsoon Volatility The new contracts target financial exposure in sectors including agriculture, banking, power, and infrastructure. Mumbai's four-month rainy season often disrupts supply chains and transport networks, creating costs that traditional insurance or government relief may not fully cover. NCDEX said the derivative allows participants to treat rainfall as a tradable market signal.
