India considers softening renewable energy grid penalties
India may ease penalties for renewable energy producers missing grid targets. Developers warned the rules could hurt revenue and slow clean-energy investment.
India is exploring a potential easing of proposed penalties for renewable energy producers who fail to meet stricter grid-supply commitments. The move comes after solar and wind developers cautioned that the new regulations could negatively impact revenues and discourage investment in the nation’s burgeoning clean energy sector.
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission had proposed tighter rules in a draft released in September, designed to narrow the gap between the amount of electricity producers promise to supply and the actual output generated. These regulations, which featured heavy penalties for missing targets, were originally slated for implementation in April 2026.
