India Becomes Largest Rice Producer Amid Water Crisis
India surpasses China as the top rice producer, doubling exports to over 20 million metric tons. However, unsustainable groundwater use in Punjab and Haryana poses long-term risks.
Insights:
India has overtaken China as the world's largest rice producer, achieving a significant milestone by nearly doubling its rice exports to over 20 million metric tons annually. This achievement, however, comes with a pressing concern: the unsustainable extraction of groundwater in Punjab and Haryana, the country's leading rice-producing states.
In these regions, aquifers are being depleted faster than they can naturally recharge, with groundwater that was once accessible at around 30 feet now requiring borewells to reach depths of 80 to 200 feet. This has pushed many farmers into escalating debt as they invest in longer pipes and more powerful pumps to sustain their livelihoods. Despite these challenges, government subsidies continue to incentivize water-intensive rice cultivation over less demanding alternatives, such as millets, which are gaining popularity in urban areas for their health benefits.
