Libyan Protesters Block UN Refugee Office in Tripoli
Hundreds of demonstrators blocked the UNHCR office in Tripoli on Thursday to demand the removal of migrants from the country. Protesters used sand barriers to close the building entrance while the UN mission affirmed the right to peaceful expression but denied any migrant resettlement programs exist in Libya.
Hundreds of Libyan demonstrators blocked the United Nations refugee agency office in Tripoli on June 4 to protest against migrant settlement. The gathering represents the largest in a series of recent actions targeting the 900,000 migrants currently residing in the country. This influx of people, fleeing poverty and conflict, has created social friction in a nation of 7 million people that relies on foreign labor for its oil-dependent economy.
