Lawmaker Challenges Commerce Over Rare Earth Deal Terms
Representative Zoe Lofgren questioned a $1.58 billion rare earth deal citing potential conflicts. She raised concerns over a family-run investment firm.
A senior Democratic lawmaker in the United States has challenged a major federal investment deal, alleging significant conflicts of interest involving the U.S. Commerce Department. Representative Zoe Lofgren, the ranking member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, has formally questioned the structure of a $1.58 billion agreement with USA Rare Earth Inc.
In a 10-page letter addressed to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Lofgren claimed the deal provides the government with highly concerning leverage over the private company while simultaneously benefiting Lutnick’s family-run investment interests. The arrangement allegedly leaves the company dependent on a $1.5 billion private capital raise led by Cantor Equity Partners IV, Inc. Class A Ordinary Shares, a financial firm formerly headed by Lutnick and currently managed by his sons.
