Honda Motor Co., Ltd., headquartered in Japan, has announced a significant downward revision to its financial outlook, projecting an operating loss of as much as $3.5 billion for the current fiscal year. The automaker cited mounting costs associated with a comprehensive review of its electric vehicle strategy as the primary driver for the anticipated deficit. The company slashed its previous forecast of a 550 billion yen profit to an expected operating loss ranging between 270 billion yen and 550 billion yen ($1.7 billion to $3.46 billion). This reversal comes as the manufacturer faces a challenging environment in the United States and broader North American markets, where a slowdown in EV demand has prompted the cancellation of several planned model launches. Beyond the immediate operating loss, the company also lowered its net profit expectations for the financial year ending this month. It now anticipates a net loss of 420 billion yen to 690 billion yen, a sharp contrast to the 300 billion yen profit previously projected. Honda indicated that the strategic shift could result in total expenses and losses of approximately 2.5 trillion yen over several financial years. To mitigate these losses and adapt to shifting market conditions, the automaker plans to prioritize the development of next-generation hybrid models and enhance its existing hybrid lineup to improve profitability. A revamped mid-to-long-term business strategy is expected to be unveiled during the next fiscal year. In response to the financial downturn, top leadership is taking personal accountability. CEO Toshihiro Mibe and Executive Vice President Noriya Kaihara will voluntarily forego the equivalent of 30% of their compensation for three months, while other senior executives will forego 20% of their pay over the same period.
