European utilities are boosting coal-fired generation by 25% over the next six months as Natural Gas prices surge above €80 ($90.98) per megawatt hour. The spike follows disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz after conflict erupted between Iran and the United States in late February. The shift reverses a multi-year decline that saw coal's share of EU electricity drop to a record low of 9.2% in 2025.
