Hesse Premier Calls for Concrete UniCredit Commerzbank Bid
Hesse Premier Boris Rhein urged UniCredit on Tuesday to submit a concrete offer for Commerzbank. He sought clarity following a low bid for a 30 percent stake.
The state premier of Hesse in Germany has called on Italy-based UniCredit S.p.A. to provide a formal proposal and clarify its strategic objectives regarding its pursuit of Commerzbank AG. Boris Rhein, whose state encompasses the Frankfurt financial hub where Commerzbank is headquartered, emphasized the need for transparency as the cross-border banking drama intensifies. > I support the clear expectation for UniCredit to put a concrete offer on the table, Boris Rhein told Reuters. UniCredit has recently increased pressure on Commerzbank to enter merger negotiations by launching a bid to raise its stake beyond 30 percent. However, the move has been met with significant resistance. Bettina Orlopp, the chief executive of Commerzbank, characterized the current approach as very low and noted that UniCredit has yet to share a clear vision for a potential merger. This sentiment reflects a broader reluctance within the German lender toward any takeover deal. The federal government in Berlin has expressed opposition to a hostile acquisition, while the Hesse state government remains focused on maintaining Frankfurt’s status as a leading financial center in Europe. The lack of detailed information from UniCredit has only added to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of the two major European lenders.
