Guatemala agreed to conduct joint military strikes with the United States against drug trafficking organizations within its borders. The U.S. Defense Department also intends to press Honduras to accept similar joint military actions. The Trump administration is targeting both countries to pressure Mexico into accepting joint counter-drug operations.
The New York Times reported on May 28 that three people familiar with the talks confirmed Guatemala's agreement. Honduras has not yet agreed to similar arrangements. The move reflects an effort to create coordinated military action across Central America against cartel supply chains.
