Greek PM Opposes Shipping Tolls in Strait of Hormuz
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis rejected proposed Strait of Hormuz tolls. He warned the move would set a very dangerous precedent for navigation.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece has declared that any attempt to impose tolls on vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable, warning that such a move would jeopardize international maritime law. The statement comes as Iran proposes fees for safe passage through the strategic chokepoint, which has seen increased tension due to a conflict involving the United States and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical artery for global energy supplies, facilitating the transit of approximately 20% of the world's Brent Crude Oil and Natural Gas. As a nation controlling one of the largest merchant fleets in the world, the Greek government views the freedom of navigation through this corridor as a non-negotiable priority for global trade stability.
