Gold prices edged higher on Tuesday as investors weighed the impact of Middle Eastern conflict against upcoming central bank policy decisions. Spot prices rose 0.4% to $5,023.19 per ounce, while futures in the United States for April delivery gained 0.5%, reaching $5,027.20.

Market participants are closely monitoring the situation in Iran, where officials recently stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not closed to all traffic. Despite some vessels passing through, the conflict involving Israel has kept the critical waterway largely obstructed, leading to the most significant disruption to global energy supplies on record. The administration in Washington has repeated calls for international assistance to unblock the strait, though nations have been hesitant to offer support.

The logistical challenges have kept Brent Crude Oil prices above $100 per barrel. Higher energy costs typically drive inflation, supporting gold's role as a hedge; however, the potential for higher interest rates to combat rising prices often dampens demand for the non-yielding metal.

Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive, suggested that the market is currently in a state of assessment.

Gold prices pulled back in the first 24 hours of trade this week, echoing a positive response to diplomatic signals from the region. Watching news-flow from the war and its effect on crude oil remains a key input, but the upcoming Fed meeting also has big catalyst potential, and gold may weaken if the central bank strikes a relatively hawkish tone.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to maintain interest rates for a second straight meeting when it announces its policy statement on Wednesday. This week also features policy meetings for central banks in the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden, marking their first sessions since the outbreak of the war.

In other precious metals trading, Silver rose 0.6% to $81.28 per ounce. Platinum climbed 2.2% to $2,161.35, and Palladium advanced 1.4% to $1,620.45.
