Gold prices maintained a steady position on Thursday as investors weighed the potential outcomes of ceasefire discussions between the United States and Iran. Market participants are also preparing for critical inflation data that could provide further clarity on the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.

Spot prices for the precious metal were little changed at $4,713.79 per ounce by early morning GMT, while futures for June delivery retreated by 0.8% to $4,736.50. Analysts suggest that the market is currently in a holding pattern, awaiting more definitive signals from the geopolitical arena.

"It doesnt seem like gold is looking to do much at this moment. I think theres still a lot of speculation on whats going to happen after the ceasefire," said GoldSilver Central Managing Director Brian Lan.

The geopolitical landscape remains volatile following significant military action by Israel against targets in Lebanon, which has prompted threats of retaliation. This instability has also impacted energy markets, with Brent Crude Oil prices rising on concerns that regional supply might be disrupted if the two-week ceasefire fails to hold.

Since the onset of the conflict in late February, spot gold has seen a decline of more than 10%. Higher energy costs have intensified inflation worries, leading markets to adjust their expectations for interest rates. Gold, which does not yield interest, typically finds more support in environments where rates remain low.

Investors are now focused on the upcoming Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data for February and the March consumer price index. Federal Reserve minutes recently indicated that some policymakers are open to further rate hikes to bring inflation back to the 2% target.

"Beyond near-term liquidity needs, we expect gold to continue to rebuild its gains in the coming months amid heightened geopolitical risk," Standard Chartered said in a note on Wednesday.

In other precious metals markets, Silver dropped 0.5% to $73.71 per ounce. Meanwhile, Platinum decreased by 0.6% to $2,017.26, and Palladium slipped 0.4% to $1,549.18.
