Gold Prices Fall on Stronger Dollar and Rate Concerns
Gold prices fell on Monday as a firm dollar and rate hike fears weighed on bullion. Investors await key inflation data and the next Federal Reserve meeting.
Prices for Gold retreated by more than 1% on Monday, under pressure from a strengthening dollar and growing expectations of higher interest rates. Spot prices fell 1.7% to $5,080.99 per ounce, while futures in the United States for April delivery dropped 1.3% to $5,089.80. While the metal is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, its appeal as a non-yielding asset often diminishes when interest rates remain elevated.
The market reaction comes as conflict in the Middle East fuels concerns over global inflation and energy security. The military of Israel recently announced strikes in central Iran and the capital of Lebanon, Beirut. This escalation has effectively halted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied gas shipments.
