Global stocks rebound on Middle East peace talk hopes
Global stocks rose Thursday as Israel signaled potential peace talks with Lebanon. Oil prices eased from highs while the dollar and Treasury yields fell.
Global equity markets staged a recovery on Thursday as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East showed signs of easing, leading to a cooling of the recent oil price rally. The MSCI INC global stock gauge reversed its earlier losses to trade higher after Israel indicated a willingness to enter peace negotiations with Lebanon. This shift in sentiment also saw the United States dollar lose ground while Treasury yields trended lower.
The market turnaround was largely attributed to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who instructed the start of peace talks with Lebanon. These discussions are expected to address the disarming of Hezbollah, a group with significant ties to Iran. These diplomatic signals helped ease concerns that military actions would disrupt a fragile truce involving the United States. Earlier in the day, oil prices had spiked following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and concerns over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
