Global equities recorded modest gains on Monday as market participants monitored diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran. While some reports indicated discussions for a 45-day ceasefire involving mediators and Israel, the geopolitical situation remained volatile after Tehran reportedly communicated its rejection of the terms via Pakistan.

The market remains sensitive to potential escalations, particularly following warnings regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth, noted the cautious stance of many investors in the current environment.

Until we have some kind of concrete agreement its hard to be fully committed to investing.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.13% to 46,564.03, while the S&P 500 rose 0.18% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.24%. Gains were capped by economic data showing a slowdown in the U.S. services sector during March, alongside rising input prices that suggest persistent inflationary pressure resulting from the ongoing conflict.

In the currency markets, the dollar index declined, allowing the EUR/USD to rise to $1.1553. Conversely, the USD/JPY pair strengthened to 159.7 as traders kept a close watch on Japan. Japanese authorities have recently signaled a readiness to intervene against excessive volatility in the foreign exchange market.

Fixed income markets saw little movement as investors balanced ceasefire hopes against the risk of further strikes. The 10-year Treasury yield settled near 4.333%. Market expectations for Federal Reserve policy have shifted following a robust March employment report, which showed a gain of 178,000 jobs. Analysts at Wells Fargo Investment Institute now suggest that interest rate cuts may not materialize until much later than previously anticipated.

Commodity prices were mixed during the session. U.S. crude oil fell 0.56% to $110.92 per barrel, while Brent crude dropped to $108.74. In the metals sector, Gold was largely unchanged at $4,680.29 per ounce, and Silver saw a slight decline to $72.71 per ounce.
