Germany approves multibillion euro stake in TenneT energy grid
Germany's budget committee approved a 25.1 percent stake in TenneT Germany for 5.8 billion euros. This move aims to secure control over critical energy assets.

DE’s budget committee approved the purchase of a 25.1 percent minority stake in TenneT Germany on January 16, 2026, for a total of 5.8 billion euros. This decision marks the realization of a long-standing strategic objective for Germanyto secure greater control over critical energy infrastructure assets. The acquisition follows a failed attempt by the government to take a stake in the operator in 2024.
The approval from the budget committee saw support from representatives of the conservatives, the SPD, and the Greens. Members of the AfD in the GermanParliament voted against the measure, while the Left Party chose to abstain. As part of the investment framework, the government has earmarked the initial 5.8 billion euros and committed to further payment obligations related to capital increases scheduled between 2026 and 2029.
