Germany Approves Voluntary 1000 Euro Worker Bonus
Lawmakers approved a tax-free relief payment to help employees manage high energy costs. The voluntary measure allows companies to pay bonuses through June 2027.
The lower house of parliament in Germany has officially approved a legislative package designed to mitigate the financial strain on citizens caused by soaring energy costs. At the heart of the measure is a voluntary relief bonus of up to 1,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 1,169.30 in EUR/USD, which employers can choose to distribute to their staff.
Lawmakers from the governing coalition, comprised of the conservative CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats (SPD), supported the initiative. In contrast, the AfD and the Left Party opposed the bill, while the Greens opted to abstain from the vote. The program allows companies to issue these one-off payments until June 30, 2027, with the incentive that the bonuses remain tax-free for employees and tax-deductible for the businesses providing them.
